We have recently discovered an error that can prevent members from logging in to the telescopes or reservation systems while using macOS and iOS systems thanks to reports from the iTelescope.Net Community.

The recent update to Safari on both Mobile and Desktop platforms has led to an error, "401 Access Denied" when you attempt to log in to a telescope, reservation system, or offline plan generator.  This error pops up prior to members being able to enter a username or password, and to our current knowledge, it is only affecting Safari users that have the most recent updates to macOS or iOS.

Specifically, we can verify that the issue is present in Safari 11.0.2 for macOS users, which is delivered with the High Sierra 10.13.2 update.  Previous versions do not seem to be having this error.  For mobile platforms (iOS), the issue is present in both iOS 11.2.1 and 11.2.2, but we are unsure when it was introduced.

We have reported this issue to Apple and are awaiting a response, but in the interim, there is a very simple workaround.  If you receive this error immediately after clicking on a link to log in to a telescope, reservation system, or offline plan generator (before you have a chance to enter a username/password), then hitting refresh on your browser should prompt the system to bring you to the correct login screen, allowing you to enter your login details.

We will continue working with Apple to discover a more permanent solution, but we hope this information helps in the meantime.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at support@itelescope.net.

We apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and understanding as we try to work through this issue.
